This year we received inquiry from 3 countries' Huawei sales team about the MA5600/5800 series MDU, so we hereby make a small summary for our communities.
- MDU means Multi-Dwelling Unit, which is a dedicated Noun of FTTx/GPON/EPON systems, similar to the ONU/ONT, working on the customer side to build a link between the user and the ISP/telco. The difference between an MDU and ONU is that MDU supports multi-tenants in one building, and ONU only supports 1 unit user. So in short, MDU is for FTTB (Building), and ONU is more suited for FTTH (Home, can also be used in the multi-tenant buildings). The MDU/FTTB mode is for typical Multi-home or serviced-apartments.
- Huawei teams informed us that Huawei has stopped manufacturing MDU products because of their strategic direction since 2020. As we see, Huawei has determined that they believe in future, it's better for the ISP/telco to provide FTTH by default for lower-overall-cost. We don't have comments to Huawei's decision, but obviously some ISP/Telcos need to expand still a bit of their MDU systems.
- Specifically, Huawei's MA5821 / 5822 series MDU supports GE customer-side ports, and MA5620 / 5626 series only support FE. So if needed, better always consider MA5821 / 5822 first.
- For MA5620 / 5626 / 5821 / 5822 series, and other minor versions like MA5675 / 5672 / 5671 / 5671A, etc, we can help source all series' used products. For MA5821 / 5822 series, we can find some new products, but quantity is not big. In case you may need, please let us know and we can help you gauge the best options in the open market, and test them one-by-one for all key tech performance like FO transmitting power, etc.
